The New Evangelization
FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students, is a national outreach that invites college students into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church, inspiring and equipping them for a lifetime of Christ-centered evangelization, discipleship, and friendships in which they lead others to do the same.
Tens of thousands of college students have been impacted by FOCUS and their national conferences. Since 1998, nearly 350 young adults have entered the seminary and/or religious life after being involved with FOCUS on campus. Thousands more have graduated from college and been launched into the arts, sciences and marketplace to continue to live out their lifelong Catholic mission.
Each year, FOCUS missionaries are sent in teams of men and women to college campuses at the invitation of the local bishop and with the support of the local Newman Center or existing campus ministry. Since it was founded in 1998, FOCUS has grown from four missionaries serving a single campus to the more than 350 who will work on 74 campuses this year.
The missionaries are typically recent college graduates who devote two or more years of their post-collegiate lives to reach out to their peers full-time on campus. Through genuine friendship and personal investment, FOCUS missionaries invite students into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the fullness of life found in the Catholic Church. In response to the Church's call for a "new evangelization," FOCUS seeks to communicate the Gospel to young adults in a dynamic and culturally relevant way. They do this primarily by hosting creative outreach events, starting Bible studies and investing in student-leaders through one-on-one mentoring.
In the fall of 2012, FOCUS began serving 14 new campuses, including Harvard University, Northwestern University, and the University of Virginia.
